First, a connection; the on line community created by Bonnie bright called the Depth Psychology Alliance includes a magazine called Depth Insights. Bonnie published my symbolic review of The Far Side of the Moon (2003). FSOM is a symbolically loaded story by Canadian Robert Le Page, in which two brothers (both played by LePage) embody the two sides of a human psyche. The link to the e-zine here. So get hold of FSOM and then see how your experience dovetails and differs from mine! It's an especially great film for those who are of a more or less artistic or unworldly temperament.
This four elements prayer is voiced in the first person because I like to bypass the object relations (self-other) when possible. That's wisdom; realizing that we are all of it. The point to the prayer is not only to sacralize these elemental qualities in self and otherwise, but to educate, in its meaning of "draw out". Thus it is meant to inspire learning about the elements in the sense of the many ways they manifest and touch our lives. I invite you to add and/or take away whatever you wish from it; I could certainly do so. Make it your own!
There are four stanzas for each element, and two for the wrap up. As I was composing it, I realized it would be awesome to use the body while reciting. I like to memorize things but am particularly averse to droning incantation, which easily gets coopted by the reptilian brain mode. Then the piece loses that soul spark I refer to as "I am fire...that now, now, now, lights earthborn dark". We can create the same thing over and over with inspiration-spark in theory...but I am not very good at that. I do best at connecting when I can change it up; I think of it as "updating". This has made me a professional dilettante, which works OK for writers...I know a little about a lot of things.
I'm sure the fun of using body gesture would be making your own up, but as an example of what I mean, I cover my eyes at "the great unseen". Make my hands dance swirling together at "shapeshifter". Both hands rise together at "featherlifter" as though I was levitating a feather. A hand sweep for "winds of change". Hands to heart and forehead at "minds and hearts to rearrange". If you want more, email me. As you can see it's mostly hands and face stuff, so far anyway. Maybe something more "whole body" will emerge...
The snow is dropping heavier yet...perhaps I will write a tune for the blessing as well! Oh boy- the full monty! Then I can add some props...
I am air, the great Unseen
Shapeshifter, featherlifter, betwixt, between.
My gift is borne on winds of change,
Hearts and minds to rearrange.
I am air, I know full well
Spirit comes as man to dwell,
Throws the shuttle trailing light
Through the warp of day and night.
I am air, the sharpened sword
I cast the spells of thought and word.
I cleave the one into the pair
One is foul, the other fair.
I am air, and use me well
Shine clear light where tongues do tell
Remember that concealed I be
St. Michael’s Truth, Eternity.
I am fire, Passion’s Flame
Primeval power, swift horse’s mane
Inner hearth and guardian wild
Thrumming blood, fondness riled
I am fire, the artist’s spark
That now, now, now, lights earthborn dark.
No creature here would bide or be
Lest Sun’s fire-gift did oversee.
Lightning flash, Uriel’s cleave,
What to take, what to leave.
Ash to ash and dust to dust,
Before Death’s knell it’s die we must.
I am fire, that cleansest true
Stand my hold, be born anew.
The flaming heart, the torch of love
Starlight within, starlight above.
I am Earth, round Mother-Home
Spinning soul, whirling stone,
Cauldron from which all are born
Great oak tree and blest seed corn.
In my lap the two are one
Evil false and fear undone.
Highest mountain, deepest grave,
All are holy, Erda’s nave.
Grain of sand, salt of Earth,
Shedding snake, luck of birth,
Barefoot humble, warmth of home,
Simple pleasures, stalwart bone.
Sightless knowing is my boon,
In your heart hear Mother’s croon.
Hold my hand as spirals form;
Grim thoughts spent and sages born.
I am water, flowing rill,
Wisdom-well, larks’ night-trill,
Cleanser, soother, fire-douse,
Restless wave, grand fish-house.
I am water, know my source
Life’s meander, humbler course,
Moon’s reflection, inner light.
Never separate, always here,
Seas inside us, sacred tear,
Joy of otter, salmon’s turn,
Diving loon and watching hern.
Water’s one and one in all,
Seed waits calm for blest dew fall.
Aphrodite’s sea-born love,
Sky releases from above.
I am the four by right of birth;
Air and fire, water, earth.
Blessed gift to here abide
Wise king, fool, and holy bride.
Wind at my back, steady feet,
Mystery welcome, ring complete.
Heart-strong passion, deep spring-flow,
Thus does wisdom grow and grow.
Enjoy! Nothing like this snowstorm for hunkering down and creating! Probable power outage might hinder the "doing" part...
